Kristinnugent.com is a minimalist portfolio site for a designer and architect in Santa Monica.
It was developed with cutting edge tools, which resulted in ultra high performance, security, super-easy maintenance, and free hosting for life.
I made the site using Hugo static site generator. For CSS we decided on Tachyons.io, the smallest framework in existence. By merely relying on native fonts, tachyons already carries big advantages in resource costs.
The source code and production files are pulled from Github. When changes are made, Netlify is configured to continuously deploy the changes.
By hooking up Forestry CMS, the owner is easily able to manage their portfolio. After changes are made, Hugo performs post processing on all images and code when Netlify automatically runs a deploy command.
Not counting images, only 14KB of data is transferred when visiting their homepage!
A super fast site with clean code, loads in 0.5 seconds and scores 100/100 on Google Pagespeed Insights.
Netlify also comes with free SSL, free form management, and uses NS1 for DNS management; making it the fastest and best host for static sites. Netlify also uses Amazon’s Content Delivery Networks. The best part is, hosting doesn’t cost a dime, and maintenance is nonexistent. There are no plugins or software to maintain. All of these advantages are because static sites are “headless” and require very little resources to serve.
We also got around to conducting mass data migration to Google as their new Email Provider, which comes with Optical Character Recognition on email attachments.
We also got reports on search engine presence and traffic history, and analyzed the competition. This was a new build on an existing domain, so creating 301 redirects, as is with most rebuilds, an important step!
